It’s New Year’s day, January 1 2015. Happy new year to you! This is the day millions of people make new year resolutions to change things in their lives for the better. Some will vow to lose weight, others will resolve to break bad habits and some will set new goals for career, income, love, and other things dear to their hearts. It’s a positive day for change, brought about by the tradition of making new year resolutions.
The sad part about it is that over 90% will fail in their endeavors to make significant changes in their lives for the better. The reason for their failure is in their follow-through. Making changes in your life can be hard work done consistently over a period of time. They say it takes 40 days to make a new habit or break an existing one, and many people just don’t stay committed through that 40 days.
Why do they abort their chosen goals? Mainly because they didn’t anticipate the effort required to stick with it long enough to establish the new pattern. For this reason the resolutions you make or the goals you set have to be significant enough to you to keep you on the right path. The rewards you experience from achieving whatever it is you want have to outweigh the work required of you to achieve them. If they aren’t, you’re likely to give up early and never achieve what you want.
It’s Time to Take Control by Yielding Control
No matter who you are and what you’re doing in life, you have to take control of yourself and your situation as much as possible in order to be and do your best. As a Christian, there are forces working against you in this world and unless you’re willing to take control and make a genuine stand, the odds are against you succeeding in your endeavors. This is especially true if your goals involve doing something for our Lord Jesus Christ. Believing what God says about you is paramount to overcoming obstacles the world throws your way.
Talking about the devil, the world and the influences in the world, this is what God has to say to you about you…
I John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
That’s the truth. Through Christ you have overcome the world, the influences of the world, devil spirits and the devil himself. Do you believe it? If not, I suggest you do a word study on what God has done for you in Christ. You must realize the truth of your position in Christ in this world if you want to make significant changes in your own life and to help others around you do the same.
So how does one ‘take control?” It’s a simple process.
- Learn and believe what God has done for you through Jesus Christ.
- Walk by the spirit God placed in you so you can receive our Lord’s counsel and direction.
- Act as if you are who God says you are.
Some call this “yielding control” to the spirit of God within you. I’d agree with that as long as you understand you have an active part in it. By yielding control to the spirit of God given to you, you are actually taking control of your own life.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
That’s quite a promise from God’s Word, isn’t it? By submitting ourselves to God we resist the devil and he will flee from us. It reminds me of the temptations our Lord went through in the wilderness at the start of his ministry to Israel. How did Jesus resist the devil during those temptations? He submitted himself to God by clinging to God’s written Word.
Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get you behind me, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.
“It is written” needs to become your motto, your go-to solution when temptation and hard times come. You can trust God and lay hold of the promises in God’s Word to get you successfully through anything you’re confronted with. The more of God’s Word you use, the more ammunition you have against the methods of the devil and his host. God’s Word is your sword of the spirit so get adept at using it. Learning more of God’s Word and standing more on the Word you already know are good new year’s resolution to make.
What Will Your New Start Be This Year?
To me, every day is a new start, but the world places emphasis on New Year’s day for making resolutions for a better life. If you’re reading this on some other day than New Year’s day, I encourage you to think about your life, where you’re heading in all areas of your life and see if changes are needed to become more of who God wants you to be and to accomplish what God’s placed on your heart to do. If so, start right now. Make a new start. Set some worthy goals that God will bless and stay committed to them through their completion.
Everybody has something about themselves that they don’t like. Everybody feels like they fall short before the omniscience and awesomeness of our one true God. None of us will be perfected before our Lord returns to gather us to himself, and absolutely no-one can say they have ‘arrived.’ We’re all at different points in our walk with God, but each one of us is loved, accepted and blessed by our Father God.
I’d like to leave you with some of the most encouraging words that God has to say about you. Think about these things, meditate upon them, and let them sink into your heart and being. Believe what God says about you by acting like it’s true. See the difference it makes in your outlook and in your accomplishments this year.
Ephesians 1:3-14 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
The Christian walk is a day-by-day affair. Some people respond to truth quicker than others. Some are able to make significant changes in their lives faster than others. Some have more personal and physical assets to get the things done they want to do. But regardless of who you are and what you have, God is your Father and is able to make you stand. All you need to do is respond by believing and acting on what God says.
If you are making new year’s resolutions, center them in the truth of God’s Word, stay committed to them and God will see you through. If you need a new start, there’s no day better than today. God is able and willing to move heaven and earth to help you achieve that which He has planned for you. You mean that much to Him!
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD your God, he it is that does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.
Matthew 18:20 b And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Have a great new year and a make a great new start living for God and our Lord Jesus Christ. You can and will succeed in whatever you set your hand to do in accordance with the will of God as you walk by the spirit of God.
